I googled PBS KNocking to find the website. A casual glance showed me that this is not a neutral show. It seems to emphasize the Witnesses' stronger points while not revealing many scandals. Originally, I wanted to view it. Clicking on different sections, it looks like a waste of time.

JWs Celebrating Brithdays
by Franklin Massey ini keep hearing of more and more jws that are celebrating their birthdays or, doing "special days" for their children on the day of their birth.
i'm sure this has always been done but what interests me is that many people aren't ashamed to admit it since they have used their own fully functioning minds to figure out that the society's birthday ban doesn't hold up.
one young couple with two kids (he's an ms, she's an ex-pioneer who dropped off the list to tend to the kids) explained it to me this way.... "the happiest days of our lives include the births of our children.

This brings me to Christmas and the incarnation of Christ. Only they don't believe in God made Flesh. I do. It was so painful not celebrating birthdays. My mom would sneak a b'day celebration for us. She would get us cupcakes and hide the little candles. There is actually photographic evidence of my self around three, wearing a pointed birthday cap with a cupcake. The hush, hush, don't tell your father or we will beat attitude was confusing.
It was agony to watch the kids celebrate their birthdays. We looked like orpahsn. I go ape over birthday and Christmas celebrations to this day. B/c of sad circumstances, I don't have my own family. Celebrating by myself is a big deal. I could go on but people would not be here unless they knew.

What the law says...
by TD in...is not always what the law actually means.. that idea might sound like doublethink at first, but it's a basic principle of every legal system and there are several very valid reasons for this.. first: a simple, mechanical reading of law can run counter to what the law was actually intended to accomplish.
here's a simple example to illustrate this:.
there are certain plants in the american southwest that are protected by law.

Our negligence law evolved very, very slowly to accomodate evolving ideas about power. The railroad cases were awful in law school. It seemed that almost all litigation revolved around the rr. Government protected the rr as an economic engine. Ordinary people were disposable. I vaguely remember all these silly legal notions tacked on to change the outcomes.
I went to college in NY. B/c of protests, the school recruited Yeshiva girls. They were Orthodox Jews. There was no logical consistency about rules. They did not like mixing with Gentiles but I served their purpose. Lightbulbs could not be switched on at night. So rather than break the law, I was awakened at three am, more than once, to flick the switch. Telephone calls were forbidden yet if I were on the line and the other end had a Gentile, too, we could pass on messages. All this was completely new to me. It annoyed me. It hurt b/c I was never accepted or even rejected for me. I was the Gentile. So I told myself that Christians had nutty rules. Yeshiva University existed. Finally, the faculty revolted and said all they could do was recite facts. Nothing was questioned.
Jesus dined socially with Pharisees. I can see the enmity between Jesus and the Saducees. Jesus appears to me to be a Pharisee, roaming the country side applying the Law to local conditions. My hunch is the two movements were closely aligned until Stephen was martryed. Woe to you Pharisees and scribes. Something was going on that is not revealed in scripture, IMO>

Confession iPhone app blessed by Catholic bishop
by unshackled ina confession app for your iphone is just absurd.
can humans get any nuttier?
but really...this is not a whole lot nuttier than confessing to a man dressed up in robes proclaiming to be your mediator between you and some supreme invisible being.. http://www.cbc.ca/technology/story/2011/02/08/technology-confession-app-catholic-church.html#socialcomments.

The vatican said no way, never, no way. The bishop has been seriously rebuked. Face to face contact is essential.

I never told my mom when kids brought b'day cake to school. So I ate other's cakes but never had my own.
As an adult, I made certain I would have cake and a Christmas tree. One of the best bakeries in NYC is Dean & DeLuca in SoHo. They have lush buttercream cakes. If you order ahead, you can dictate your colors and specific flowers. They are not cheap. I ordered one for my mom's b'day and my b'day. Next, I bought Schramsberg champagne, considered the best CA domestic. Bliss. No one not a Witness could savor that b'day cake as much as I savored mine. Special fillings - too.
Speaking of cakes, I ordered King cake for Mardi Gras. Not a culinary masterpiece but fun. The voodoo type trinkets included were interesting. I adore this stuff. Dean & DeLuca and King cake are worth every penny to me. Screw the Society. God gave us the ability to transform wheat and eggs and wine into these exquisiste things.

If Armageddon came tomorrow, would Jehovah kill a billion children?

Band on the Run
Since the fifties, I've been waiting for a nuclear Armageddon. The chances of it are much greater than in the 50s when I practiced such survival skills as crouching under my student desk with my hands over my eyes. I had to memorize all the civil defense shelters on the way to school. It was worse than 9/11 and I lived downtown Manhattan. Finally, I realized I was so blessed to live in either NY or DC compared to sucker sin VT or Montana.
This is why I could never believe in Jehovah as a child. God does not do these things. I always felt sorry for Isaac and the flood victims. One billion children indeed. What kind of human endorses this slaughter? Why did my loving family accept this teaching? People who went out of their way to help small children. I love looking at fresh borns in the maternity ward -- now it is hard b/c of security. Welcome the precious ones to the world. Who would worship a God who would kill newborns? What sins could they commit?
When I was in the Witnesses, no one ever addressed how JWs survive. Yes, they survive. How? Does the Society have radioactive proof garb? Would a tsunami or earthquake not function in the very small space of a single Witness. Logic is long since gone. Acts of God have a legal meaning. No one is safe. No liability is attached. They are so destructive no insurer wants to underwrite them.
I grew up with the orange Paradise Lost book. Sounds like Milton, doesn't it? One of the early illustrations showed Bal sacrifices with infants. So Jehovah has a smokin' fire next to Bal. A rose by another name would smell as sweet. A petty, vengeful, force of destruction is just as bad whether named Bal or Jehovah.
On another note, would it not be cool media presence for former JWs to march on Kh with signs of infants slaughtered at Armageddon. It is an arresting image. Trinity or no trinity. Physicial or spiritual resurrection. Dead babies is extremely potent. If A. comes, I will throw myself on a baby to save it from J.wrath.

I received juvenile ones. My mom and sister send me valentines. Romantic ones -- never and I am no longer young. It hurts every year. I have very specific dreams for Perrier-Jouet champagne with the Art Nouveau flowers on the bottle, a lush floral boquet, Teuscher;s chocolates, La Perla or Hanro lingerie, a formal dinner. Opening night at the Met combined with gifts.
I am still going to hope. My plans are to reciprocate with a fine custom made men's shirt, Hermes or Ferragamo tie, travel gift, or a first edition of a beloved book. I even have men's fragrances picked out.
What I need is a Ken doll.

Song Lyrics that have hite a chord!
by AnonJW inever listened to a song, and the lyrics really touched & hit a nerve with what you are going through faith wise?.
i listened to an album the other day for the first time and there was a lot - quite a few of the songs hit.
i'm not afraid to say that driving along, some made tears well up a bit - it was the robbie williams escapology album, the songs "better man" and "come undone" had lines in them that really hit home.

This has to drop. College was a while ago. The students I meet today are not braggarts. There is a way of conveying one's earnestness, ambition and discipline in a more sophisticated manner. Frankly, I'd rather have someone err on the side of being brash to being as deferential and self effacing as the Witnesses teach. There are regrets on both sides. The Internet is not a friendly place. I erred by believing the surface appeal. Life teaches valuable lessons.
I accomplished much more in objective terms. When I applied, you considered yourself fortunate if any law school accepted you. I majored in political science, too. The high scoring 800 LSAT scorer tended to be a mediocre student. Brilliant classmates of mine were barred. There are ways of negotiaating the world. Perhaps I'm just very urban. Since I don't teach undergrads, I don't see many papers or presentations.
I don't wish Brett ill. Every law school, besides the new Catholic one that Bush had an alumna directing U.S. Attorney's Offices, is so liberal. I found this strange b/c one would think corporate lawyers would be conservative. It is nice to have some diversity. The ACLU and the Federalist Society are attending each other's conferences. They don't attend as spies but as lawyers interested in the perspectives of the other side. We were saved by a single former Marine. He wasn't that conservative. It was refreshing.
